Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is included in the autonomous community of Canary Islands, Spain. It consists of 53 municipalities. The area of province is disposed on islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, and La Palma.
The capital of province Santa Cruz de Tenerife is city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the island of Tenerife. Other main cities are San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Arona, Adeje, La Orotava, Granadilla de Abona, Los Realejos, Puerto de la Cruz (all of them on island of Tenerife) and Los Llanos de Aridane, Santa Cruz de La Palma (island of La Palma), San Sebastián de La Gomera (island of La Gomera), Valverde (island of El Hierro).
Island of Tenerife: Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands. It gets its name from the indigenous people of La Palma who were able to see only the snow-capped peak of Mount Teide in the distance and they called it White Mountain (tiner=mountain; ife=white).
Geographically the island is an area of contrasts. The northwest is a beautiful, rocky stretch of coastline with green fields surrounding timeless villages while the east coast is a rather unattractive, barren part of the island. The southwest coast is the centre of Tenerife's massive tourism industry where fine artificial beaches created from sand imported from the Sahara desert are the main attraction for millions of foreigners. The interior is a vast lunar landscape resulting from volcanic activity. It is the place where Mount Teide (3718m), Spain's highest peak, is situated.
The southern part of the island is the place attracting the tourists on Tenerife. It is hotter and drier and has many well developed resorts such as Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. The area is known as Costa Adeje. It comprises many world-class facilities and leisure opportunities besides sea and sand, such as quality shopping centers, golf courses (9 on the island), restaurants, water parks, animal parks, and a Congress Hall, all in a very characteristic Las Vegas-like aesthetic.
Outside the peak tourist months there are other attractions in Tenerife. Of particular note is the Carnaval celebration which begins in early February and lasts for three weeks. The Carnaval in Tenerife is the second biggest Carnaval celebration in the world after the legendary event in Rio de Janeiro.
