Municipality of
Velez-Rubio is included in
Almeria province in autonomous community of
Andalusia (South
Spain). It is situated at the foot of the Maimón, which dominates the area.
The history of the town goes back to the Roman times when a settlement was formed, but its greatest period of splendour and economic wealth was during the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period the most important and historic buildings in
Velez Rubio were constructed, characterized by a wide variety of styles - from baroque manor houses with robust walls and elaborate wrought iron balconies and windows, to modernist buildings with attractive decoration using tile work and bright colours.
Thе specific building style in the region (white facades with highly symmetrical designs where every balcony and window was carefully positioned) was called "Classical Velezano style".
